Research interests

The design and elaboration of polymetallic species is of current interest owing to their applications in catalysis, magnetism and optics. However, a precise control of the relative arrangement of the different metal centres within such an assembly remains challenging. We are currently developing a strategy based on the sequential construction of heterobimetallic architectures in the crystalline state (see Figure). It relies on an organic ligand bearing two differentiated coordination poles which may be referred to as primary and secondary (respectively red and cyan in the figure below). This differentiation is tuned by the charge and/or the nature of the elements of the poles. As a result, a hierarchy in the coordination is induced.
Upon reaction with a first metal centre, M1, a discrete complex is formed. Such species may be isolated and characterized. It offers secondary coordination poles at its periphery. Therefore, upon assembly with another metal centre, M2, an heterometallic architecture can be formed. Depending on the number of available coordination sites as well as the coordination geometry of M2, both discrete polynuclear assemblies as well as infinite networks can be prepared.
This strategy is currently being applied using organic ligands such as 4,5-diazafluorene appended dithiolates and dipyrrins, among others.
